Chiropractors can treat patients from a few minutes old onwards! Both natural and Cesar babies can benefit from chiropractic treatment.

The natural birthing process is traumatic and can cause injuries and Subluxations to occur.

Cesar babies don’t receive Neurological Sensitisation while passing though the birth canal that occurs during natural births. Chiropractic Adjustments can sensitise their Nervous System to promote healthy development.

Sensitisation of the nervous system can also help improve developmental difficulties in older infants.

Babies should visit their paediatrician before seeing a Chiropractor to be examined for any underlying conditions that may be present and require attention or monitoring with chiropractic treatment.

Specific conditions that chiropractic has shown evidence in improving include; colic, asthma, middle ear infections, ADD and ADHD and developmental difficulties. The conditions are discussed below.

Baby / Infantile Colic

Colic refers to unexplained crying of a healthy baby for extended periods. Gastrointestinal symptoms and changes in muscle tone have been indicated as possible causes.

Chiropractic Adjustments can cause nervous system stimulation and have reflex effects on the nerve control of the muscle tone of both the skeletal muscles and those of the digestive tract. This can improve symptoms.

Conditions responsible for colic may include:

Otitis Media

Otitis Media is an infection and inflammation of the middle ear behind the ear drum. The Eustachian Tube would normally drain fluids from this area but the entrance to the tube becomes blocked. Fluid pressure build up occurs and causes pain as a result.

Chiropractic care can sensitize the nervous system and affect the muscle tone of the Eustachian Tube so that it dilate and allow the release of fluid and decrease the pressure in the middle ear.

Babies should visit their paediatrician before seeing a Chiropractor to be examined and determine if their underlying ear infection is hazardous to the related anatomical structures such as the ear drum and if it requires intervention, antibiotics or monitoring with chiropractic treatment.

Asthma is both an allergic reaction and a stress response that decreases the diameter of the air passages. These air passages are muscular tubes and their diameters are controlled by their muscle tone.

There is some evidence that Chiropractic care can have an effect on the allergic reaction but there is more substantial evidence to suggest that correction of the muscle tone of the air ways can cause them to dilate so that when an asthma attack does occur it is less severe because the passages begin in a more dilated position.

Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

It is hypothesized that children with ADD or ADHD lack sufficient nervous system stimulation and that when they act out it is as a mechanism to achieve it by activation of their sympathetic nervous systems.

Causes of ADD reside in the sensory processing part on the brain. So that the processing of information remains intact however the reception of it is diminished.

Children with ADHD lack activity in the area of the brain that integrates information. Deficiencies of the neurotransmitters Dopamine, Nor-epinephrine and Serotonin have also been observed.

The anatomy of the brain is present and the development may be intact, however, it may not be functioning at its optimum. Children with ADHD are trying to stimulate these areas of the brain to function. There is evidence that Chiropractic Subluxations may cause a decrease in blood flow to the brain. This theory may explain this.

Postural muscle imbalance can also create an imbalance of brain activity that may influence ADD and ADHD.

Research has shown that Chiropractic care can improve ADD and ADHD by stimulating the nervous systems of these children and normalizing their nervous system responses.

Dietary and life style changes should accompany a Chiropractic care plan and referral to a child psychologist or Occupational Therapist may also be required.
